Walter launched his career with a solo exhibition at the Gulbenkian Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1971 and has been successfully exhibiting and selling throughout the UK and worldwide ever since.
Walter’s work has been shown in many exhibitions throughout the UK, including the Discerning Eye at London’s Mall Galleries. He was a recent prizewinner at the Royal Institution of Oil Painters exhibition and was selected (and sold) at the first Lynn Painter Stainers Prize Exhibition, London. 2005 saw the inclusion of Walter Holmes in “The Artists of Northumbria” by Marshall Hall (Art Dictionaries Ltd., Bristol).
Tyneside and Northumbria are not the only areas Walter covers; he has worked and exhibited in the Cotswolds, Windsor and Eton, the South Coast, Cornwall, the Lake District and Scotland. Recent visits to European cities have inspired Walter to work his magic with oil, acrylic and pastel and he has produced a brand new, fresh, vibrant selection of work capturing the mood and atmosphere of Venice and Prague.
Common to all his pictures is his pleasure in depicting light and his painterly use of all media. So while most of his work is representational, he sees the picture-making process as arranging a set of coloured shapes into a satisfactory abstract composition.
Over the years Walter has undertaken many special commissions for clients from private and public sectors. These commissions are commonly requested for important presentations, to create a series for a calendar or simply to decorate premises or homes. Walter is usually available at his workshop to discuss your requirements or to arrange an informal meeting and welcomes you to telephone or contact via email prior to making a visit
Walter occasionally organises his own exhibitions; if you would like to be included on the mailing list for invitations please email your name and address.
